“You’re doing it wrong”

You’re doing it wrong is the lower caption on a meme made from a still of Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky in a hot-tub video. The caption’s significance lies in its circulation: an image from their private lives is recast as material for schoolwide and online mockery.

Caption and Image

The still shows Lara Jean in a red flannel nightgown, seated on Peter Kavinsky’s lap. A sexualized headline appears above the image, while You’re doing it wrong is placed beneath it. The caption thus forms part of a two-part joke built around the image, rather than a comment made by either person depicted.

Circulation and Variations

Lara Jean and Peter first encounter the meme as wallpaper on computers in the school computer lab. Over the following days, the picture appears on other students’ Instagram accounts and Facebook walls. Other versions alter the image with a dancing shark or replace the couple’s heads with cat heads; another uses the caption Amish bikini. The repeated adaptations show how quickly the original still becomes a template for schoolwide online jokes, with You’re doing it wrong among the captions attached to it.
